Greg Vincent >Argentina

After returning to The US from Costa Rica Greg began a 5 year stretch of year round guiding at many different Locations. The summer based in Wyoming and the winters in  Patagonia, Argentina. The spring and autumn spent in Oregon and Washington States.

Greg would depart for Argentina early December each year and guide until the season closed in mid April. He guided on the many rivers and lakes in the area of Barriloche south to Rio Pico. Rivers like the Rivadavia, Carealofu, Futeleufu, Arrozo Pescado, Arriyanes, Chubut, Corcovado to name just a few.

Although most rivers were on the Pacific drainage system there were also a few that drained east into the Atlantic. This area of the world undoubtedly had some of the most beautiful rivers to be found anywhere. Some were part of natural Lake/river, lake River drainages making the water so incredibly clear you could see river bottom  in 30 or more feet of water. Rainbow trout ( mostly Mcleod river strain from California ), brown trout ( both German and Loch Leven strains ) with some brook trout were thick. Greg would often fish large attractor dries like the Chernobyl ant with great success rather than the more traditional Argentine dry fly – ‘ The wolly bugger ‘. Also available in some of the rivers were landlocked Atlantic Salmon ( Salmo Sebago from Sebago lake in Maine) These fish would drop from the lakes into the river both to feed and spawn.

Greg would also go south to Tierra del Fuego and switch his guiding between the two locations but within two seasons Greg had moved south permenantly and started a lodge with Sebastian Graziosi on the Rio Grande. This river by far the greatest Sea trout river in the world. If you are ever fishing this river from the Toonken Lodge then make sure you fish a run known as ‘ Greg’s rescue , named after Greg  who  managed to pull a drowning Guanaco ( Llama ) from the river. Also if you do then make sure you skate flies there as this is one of the best stretches of skating water on the entire river. Greg was also fortunate to guide and fish the entire waters of this river from the tide to the Chilean waters. The only stretch he did not guide on was a 4 km stretch on one bank only.

He spent many many days swinging dry flies  due to his knowledge of this fish from home in Wales as well as his Steelhead trips which at the time was not considered the thing to do. It is now common practice when conditions are correct. At times fish would rise to a properly skated dry fly over any other presentation.

Greg was also known locally in the town of Rio Pico not as a guide but also a noted celebrity as Greg and a local land owner where caught in a dispute over fishing rights culminating in shots being fired. The news traveled fast in the 50,000 people town of Rio Grande. Radio and newspapers covering the story. Translated “ Gringo and Ranch manager etc etc .’
