Greg Vincent >USA

In The spring of 1992 Greg followed up on the new and expanding industry contacts he was making and began his first of many seasons to guide in The Rocky Mountains of The US. Based out of Jackson Hole in Wyoming Greg would guide and fish a variety of rivers in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. Rainbow, brown trout and the native cutthroat trout were the most common species available in these rivers. Greg immediately fell in love with the latter of the three species mentioned because it is truly a native species compared to the many areas and fisheries of the world that although now considered wild stocks of trout they were at some point introduced. The eagerness of Cuthroat trout to rise on big bushy dry flies was something very special. Fishing was mostly from his drift boat which he trailered on a daily basis to guide and instruct on  a variety of the areas rivers. The Snake, The Green as well as many rivers and still waters in Yellowstone national park. The south gate of the world first National Park being only a 40 minute drive north from his home in Jackson. The Upper green river only an hour east and the south fork of the snake only an hours west. The location was perfect. Greg of course fished  many other rivers than those in his daily guiding routes and include such fabled  rivers as the Madison, Big horn, Henry’s fork ( North fork of the smake river ), The North Platte in SE Wyoming to name a few.

In The spring he would hitch his river drift boat to his truck and head west to guide for Smallmouth bass on the John day River in Oregon. A very interesting fishery as 5 days floats through the basalt canyons of the river created a unique fishery particularly the smallmouth bass. Rapids classed as hi as #4 had to be navigated during the float. This was a short 6 week season as river flows would fall dramatically due to water abstraction for the areas agricultural lands. This area of Oregon having it’s own micro climate with temps in as early as May reaching 105 degrees during the day with very cool evenings and mornings. Greg would then return to Jackson for the bulk of the season from June to late September or early October. Once that was complete greg would make a return trip to Oregon and also Washington state to guide for steelhead on The Grand Ronde and snake rivers. Greg would also make trips into British Columbia and fish the famous steelhead rivers of The Baulkley, Kispiox, Thompson as well as the mighty Skeena river. Introduced to steelhead by a fellow guide Greg first fished for them on the Clearwater river in Northern Idaho. The techniques were very similar to Atlantic salmon and Sea run brown trout so the transition was painless but what attracted Greg most was the ability and eagerness of the steelhead to rise and take skated flies on the surface. This was a new style of fishing for him. Other than night fishing on the surface for sea run brown trout in his native Wales ( the species so revered there it has it’s own welsh name ‘ sewin ) the ability to actually see a fish take the fly on the surface and not just hear it was a revelation. He was officially hooked on steelhead. He still tries to make a fall trip whenever possible.

After completing his first season in the North West USA Greg decided that there was one more discipline missing so he packed his bags and headed south to Costa Rica to experience the very best of big game angling on the fly.
